We are Readers!
We will be following our Daily 5 routine, and choosing "Good Fit" books to help develop our reading skills.
Daily 5 and the CAFÉ
Daily 5 is the structure we use to plan our morning Literacy block. Children will be busy completing meaningful literacy tasks. The choices are:
Listen to Reading
Read to Self
Read with Someone
Word Work
Writing About Reading
Our class will use the Daily 5 routine to orgnize our 90-minute Reading block. Children will be able to choose which rotation stations they will visit during each day's 90-minute block. They will gradually become responsible for completing their "Daily 5 Checklist" to help them keep track of which stations they have completed each day. While the students are completing their literacy tasks, I meet with small groups and conference with individual students to address individual literacy needs.
CAFÉ is an acronym for the four major components of reading that encompass the skills we work on during our Literacy block. They are:
C for Comprehension (I understand what I read)
A for Accuracy (I can read the words)
F for Fluency (I read accurately, with expression, at an apporopriate pace, and understand what I read)
E for Expanding Vocabulary (I know, find, and use intersting words)
The children continue to learn and develop reading strategies within each category. These strategies are the tools the children to use to help themselves become better readers and writers. Watch our newsletter - The Word from the Web - to keep informed when new strategies are introduced. When you read with your child at home, you will be able to reinforce these concepts.
It is exciting to watch your child's reading and writing skills blossom throughout the year. If you have any questions regarding this program, please ask. I am always happy to share what I know about Daily 5 and CAFÉ!
